Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine caregiver burden utilizing 5-multidimensional variables with an emphasis on demographic features and results of neuropsychological and neurological evaluations of patients with Neurodegenerative Diseases. We also investigated whether patient diagnosis produced a difference in caregiver burden and which characteristics of both patient and caregiver affected the burden. Data from 144 outpatients with a diagnosis of AD or PD residing in Busan were examined. Participants were asked to complete a set of questionnaires and the following statistical measurements were utilized: X©÷ chi-square, ANCOVA, and stepwise regression analysis. The results are as follows. First, the caregiver burden of Alzheimer¡¯s disease was higher in ¡®Time-Dependence Burden¡¯, ¡®Physical Burden¡¯, ¡®Social Burden¡¯ and ¡®Developmental Burden¡¯ than the caregiver burden for Parkinson¡¯s disease. Second, the caregiver burden of patients with Alzheimer¡¯s disease was affected by variables such as patient¡¯s level of functioning, daycare time, support period, economic status, and health status of caregivers. Finally, patient¡¯s gender, physical functioning, and daily care time as well as the education and economic level of the caregiver had significant effects on caregiver burden for Parkinson¡¯s disease.
